چکیده

EDITOR – We re ad w ith great inte re st the publication from Pé re z-Arellano and colle ague s. The aim of this study w as to evaluate the partic ipation of PAF in ex trinsic allergic alveolitis. We w ould like to bring to your attention the fac t that w e published a s imilar study a few years ago. Both studies show striking methodological similarities, namely the use of the same antigen to induce EAA and the same PAF antagonist. However, w e reported a decreased total BAL cell counts in BN 52021 treated animals in contrast to the results as de scribed by Pé rez-Arellano e t a l. We acknow ledge that they looked at more parameters than w e did, but it w ould have been fair just to mention our previous publication in the introduction and discuss discrepanc ies betw een their and our results. Considering the easy access to published materials w ith database s such as PubMed, w e question if such an omission w as intentional, espec ially w hen both studie s reach a s imilar conclusion.

BN 52021 (a platelet activating factor-receptor antagonist) decreases alveolar macrophage-mediated lung injury in experimental extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

Several lines of research indirectly suggest that platelet activating factor (PAF) may intervene in the pathogenesis of extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA). The specific aim of our study was to evaluate the participation of PAF on macrophage activation during the acute phase of EAA in an experimental model of this disease developed in guinea pigs. Initially we measured the concentration of PAF ...

Manganese superoxide dismutase, but not CuZn superoxide dismutase, is highly expressed in the granulomas of pulmonary sarcoidosis and extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

The role of antioxidant defense mechanisms in the pathogenesis of granulomatous human lung diseases remains open to investigation. In this study we investigated the immunoreactivity of two important superoxide radical scavenging intracellular antioxidant enzymes, manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and copperzinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD), in pulmonary sarcoidosis and extrinsic allergic...

Expression of the Fc-receptor for IgE (Fc epsilon RII, CD23) on alveolar macrophages in extrinsic allergic alveolitis

Expression of the Fc receptor for IgE (Fc epsilon R) was analyzed on alveolar macrophages (AM) in 10 patients with extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA) compared with 10 patients with sarcoidosis and to 6 apparently healthy controls. By using the anti-Fc epsilon RII mAb M-L25 in immunocytochemistry experiments, we found that greater than 60% of AM in 10 of 10 patients with EAA were strongly posit...

Relationship between plasma cell levels and profile of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in patients with subacute extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

BACKGROUND Plasma cells are usually absent in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Extrinsic allergic alveolitis is associated with increased numbers of T and B lymphocytes in BAL fluid, as well as the presence of a few plasma cells. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between the presence of plasma cells and other cells, and immunoglobulin levels in BAL flui...

Transfer of 99mTc DTPA and bronchoalveolar lavage findings in patients with asymptomatic extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

An investigation was performed to determine whether symptom free patients with previously diagnosed extrinsic allergic alveolitis had signs of inflammation in the lung. Pulmonary clearance of inhaled technetium-99m labelled diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA) was measured in seven patients with a history of extrinsic allergic alveolitis but with no symptoms at the time of the study and...
